Abstract

Valproic acid (VPA) (CAS 1069-66-5) and sodium valproate are widely used as antiepileptic drugs and mood stabilizers. Antiepileptic properties are due to inhibition of gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) transaminobutyrate and ion channel transport. VPA is implicated in various therapies, witnessed by an increasing number of clinical trials. Besides its epigenetic modulatory effects, this chapter also describes recently investigated molecular mechanisms and essential side effects of VPA.
