Abstract

Valproic acid (VPA) (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 1069-66-5) as well as sodium valproate, are widely used as an antiepileptic drug and a mood stabilizer. Antiepileptic properties have been attributed to inhibition of γ-aminobutyrate transaminobutyrate and ion channels. Due to the increasing number of clinical trials involving VPA, the increasing data provided by the literature, and some of the interesting results obtained, this molecule will probably be more and more implicated in various therapies. However, although the side effects triggered by VPA are often described in the specific medical literature, they are poorly discussed in original research articles.
