Abstract
Concern for possible health hazard due to increasing exposure to magnetic fields (MFs), came from epidemiological reports indicating a correlation between exposure to MFs and development of some types of tumours. Great interest is being given to the finding that only a subset of tumours are sensitive to MFs exposure. Parallel experimental studies at the cell level are beginning to show also differences in the sensitivity of different cells to the metabolic alterations produced by MFs. The large mass of data that only recently is beginning to accumulate, strongly suggests that MFs are able to initiate canonical signal transduction events on sensitive cells, suggesting that cells may have evolved sensors to MFs. This poses the interesting novel question on whether nowadays MFs exposure may affect living matter by altering a physiological MFs-specific intracellular signaling. Different sensitivity may thus be attributed to a tissue-specific or individual-specific expression/lack of expression of the specific receptors.
