title = "The Role of Family Caregivers in the Care of Older Adults with Cancer",
abstract = "Objectives: To provide an overview on the role of family caregivers (FCGs) in the care of older adults with cancer and review quality of life needs for FCGs. Data Sources: Journal articles, research reports, state of the science papers, position papers, and clinical guidelines from professional organizations were used. Conclusion: The high prevalence of multiple comorbidities and the associated burden of geriatric events in older adults have a substantial impact on the quality of life of their FCGs. Practical and efficient models of comprehensive assessment, interventions, and caregiving preparedness support are needed to improve outcomes for both older adults with cancer and their FCGs. Implications for Nursing Practice: Oncology nurses practicing in clinical and research settings have a responsibility to prepare themselves with evidence-based knowledge and resources to include the needs of FCGs in the care provided to older adults with cancer.",

note = "Funding Information: Professional educational curriculums have been developed and disseminated through funding support from the US National Cancer Institute's R25 Cancer Education Project. Ferrell et al 100 developed and disseminated a FCG curriculum for professional health care providers. A lecture within the curriculum was focused on the needs of FCGs caring for older adults with cancer. The curriculum was presented to competitively selected teams (including oncology nurses) from Cancer Centers through national training courses with more than 400 participants over a 5-year period. Teams developed pre- and post-training goals and were followed with re-evaluation of their goals for 18 months. Common goals included development of FCG support groups, institutional staff education on the care of FCGs, FCG resource development, FCG assessment tools, and institutional change. 100 Publisher Copyright: {\textcopyright} 2021 Elsevier Inc.",
