Abstract

Children with open growth plates cannot be treated nor considered like young or “little” adults. Understanding of the pediatric knee and its growth as well as the anatomical, hormonal, and neuromuscular changes occurring in children during maturation is one of the key factors in the diagnosis, decision-making process, and monitoring of skeletally immature patients with a midsubstance anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of these ACL injuries are crucial to protecting the long-term integrity of the child’s knee. They require to be regularly reassessed to provide each individual patient with the best care. The aim of the present chapter is to present the current understanding of pediatric ACL injuries, including challenges in their diagnosis and treatment with a particular attention to associated injuries.
