    Abstract

Handball is a very popular and one of the most injury-prone team sports and the knee is the most injured joint. Some of the injuries and injury mechanisms are sports-specific, which is due to typical movement patterns. The most frequent severe knee injury is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear which occurs frequently in female handball, mostly related to the so-called valgus collapse after landing from a jump shot or a quick directional change. The review explains various injury patterns as well as risk factors and the influence of prevention initiatives. In addition, age-related specificities are discussed.
