Abstract

When a randomized clinical trial has been completed, but before the analysis of the main outcome variable, many trialists compare the treatments groups for balance using tests of significance. This practice is critically examined. 'Ignorance, madam, pure ignorance.' Dr Samuel Johnson replying to a lady who had asked him why he defined 'pastern as the knee of a horse.
